The works I create represent different directions of activity in my search for answers to the question, who am I as an artist in this world? One of my favorite quotes about art, about what art is, comes from a Philip K. Dick short story, To Serve The Master. The story is set in a dismal future after a devastating war between robots and humanity. A lone human worker roams a radioactive post-apocalyptic landscape, and comes upon a corroded remnant of a damaged robot, still alive. The robot tells him of a time when human culture was vibrant with art, science and entertainment, and the worker asks the robot, "what is art?"
"Creative work, directed toward realization of an internal standard."
This sentence for me is a succinct description of what to do as an artist.
